Recently, it has been shown that BDNF and TrkB regulate translational machinery in dendrites.232 Moreover, BDNF induces the expression of Lim kinase 1, a protein kinase whose mRNA translation is inhibited by brain-specific microRNA-134. microRNA 134 is localized in dendrites and its overexpression leads to a decrease in spine size through repression of Lim kinase 1 mRNA translation.233 Thus, studying BDNF/TrkB and other interacting proteins in dendrites will further reveal their novel mechanistic roles in the development of depression/suicidal behavior.
