These observations as well as the high degree of co-localization that exists between Arx and GABA in embryonic and adult brains, and the observation that Arx expression is regulated by Dlx genes which are strong candidates for regulating the differentiation of most, if not all, telencephalic GABAergic neurons (Stuhmer et al., 2002), have led to the suggestion that Arx might be involved in the specification of the GABAergic phenotype.
