While a statistically significant 12-minute reduction in nightly CPAP use was shown for patients receiving modafinil compared with patients receiving placebo in a 7-week, placebo-controlled crossover study of 30 patients (Kingshott et al 2000), modafinil did not significantly alter CPAP use in the large-scale, 4-week and 12-week double-blind studies (Pack et al 2001; Black and Hirshkowitz 2005).
